Step back into medieval Scotland with historian Richard Oram for this illuminating event: This session uncovers one of the most distinctive periods in the region’s history, defined by a fierce independence and shifting loyalties.Oram traces the rise of Fergus of Galloway, shedding new light on how this powerful figure navigated the intense rivalries of the English, Irish, and Scottish Crowns. Discover how Galloway evolved from a sovereign lordship into a part of the Kingdom of the Scots and why its unique cultural identity still sets it apart from the rest of Scotland today.
Greyfriars Church, built on the site of a Franciscan friary on Moat Brae, is a historic, sacred and much loved feature of Kirkcudbright. In 1569 Sir Thomas MacLellan received a Crown charter to the lands and both church and castle were built from the same stone. In the chancel of the church is the MacLellan family vault and a trefoil-headed piscine thought to have been reclaimed from a late 15th century convent church.
Greyfriars Church is a place of prayer and worship, as well as historic significance, and is open to the public through the week.
